What is the MeetMe App and how does it work?

MeetMe is a social networking app with the tag line “chat and meet new people” and is designed to facilitate new connections and friendships. This app presents itself as an app for dating purposes and is primarily used among individuals who share common interests or geographical proximity. While MeetMe aims to foster friendships and social interactions, it’s worth noting that like many social networking platforms, it’s important for users to exercise caution and discretion when interacting with new people online.

The “Meet” feature enables users to locate others based on location, gender, and sexual orientation. Data Privacy Warning

According to the data privacy evaluation of Common Sense Media, the MeetMe app received a ‘Warning’ rating due to the risk of personal information being sold or rented to third parties. You can manage profile visibility on MeetMe by clicking the “Privacy and Content” settings in “me” icon but the default privacy settings are OFF making all your profile content public.

Predator Risk is High

The MeetMe app made it easy for offenders and malicious individuals by gathering users’ “geolocation data,” which was then shared by the company with other users, typically those on mobile devices, allowing them to identify individuals nearby. Despite MeetMe’s claims to screen users for criminal records, the company has faced legal action, accused of facilitating sexual predators in targeting minors. One such incident was reported in 2019, when Deonte Fisher, recently released from prison, swiftly became a top streamer on the Meetme platform and gained 16,000 fans within weeks.
