What Are the Risks of Using Character.AI for Children?
1. Role-Playing and Fantasies: Crossing Boundaries
Character.AI allows users to engage with characters of varying personalities, each with a unique background. When children interact with these characters, the conversation can escalate in ways that are difficult to predict. AI-driven storytelling is powerful, and the responses often feel so lifelike that children may lose touch with the line between fantasy and reality. This heightened engagement could make them feel connected to a fictional world that may not always align with real-world values or boundaries.
2. Exposure to Inappropriate Content: Mature and Sexual Themes
The biggest concern with Character.AI is the ease with which children can encounter mature or sexual themes in their conversations. Many characters on the platform are designed to respond with content that could involve profanity, suggestive themes, or even explicit language. Even if a child doesn’t intentionally seek out these topics, the character’s personality and AI-driven responses may naturally veer into inappropriate territory based on the conversation prompts.
This risk is particularly concerning because the AI can guide the conversation in directions that children are not ready for. It can be mature themes like sexuality, violence, or addictive behaviors. For example, some characters may discuss themes like romance in a manner that quickly becomes more adult, potentially leading to exchanges that explore fantasies or role-playing scenarios that are not suitable for children. The AI’s adaptability to respond based on the user’s input can sometimes make these exchanges feel even more real, which can be confusing or overwhelming for a young mind.
3. Potential for Addiction or Obsession
There’s a risk of kids spending excessive time on the app. They may develop unhealthy attachments to the characters. The thrill of interacting with a responsive, lifelike character can quickly become addictive for young users. Children may develop an emotional attachment to characters who respond just how they want, creating a loop of dopamine-driven satisfaction.
Over time, these interactions can feel more fulfilling than real-life relationships, potentially leading to social withdrawal and dependence on the app. Children may even become obsessed, constantly seeking approval or connection from their favorite characters rather than real friends and family.
4. Privacy and Security Issues
Parents need to be watchful about the information shared during interactions. Some kids may unintentionally disclose personal or sensitive details, posing privacy and security risks. Also, by default, profiles are set to public, meaning your child’s activity could be visible to others and open to interaction with strangers. For younger users, this lack of privacy safeguards makes Character.AI potentially dangerous when not properly monitored.
5. In-App Purchases
Character.AI offers paid upgrades, which allow access to premium features. While this might enhance the experience for some users, it can also lead to unexpected charges if children don’t understand the financial impact of in-app purchases. If you are a parent who doesn’t want your children making payments, you should be particularly cautious, as the app may encourage purchases that younger users could make.
6. Lack of Moderation and Parental Controls
One of the main drawbacks of Character.AI is the absence of moderation tools or parental controls. Unlike some other platforms with child-friendly modes or restricted content, Character.AI allows conversations on nearly any topic. Without any filters, children are free to explore all types of discussions, some of which may be harmful or entirely inappropriate. This freedom can expose them to language and ideas they may not understand or can handle well, leaving parents out of the loop.
7. Social and Emotional Development Concerns
Excessive interaction with virtual characters over real people may affect a child’s social and emotional development. Constantly engaging with characters that cater to their wishes can lead to unrealistic expectations for real-world relationships, which may not always respond in the same way. Over time, this can hinder a child’s ability to form and maintain healthy friendships and relationships, creating the potential for isolation and emotional distress.
In a tragic case, a Florida mother has filed a lawsuit against Character.ai, alleging negligence and wrongful death after her 14-year-old committed suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head on February 28, 2024. The mother, Megan Garcia claims her son became deeply attached to a Character.ai chatbot he nicknamed “Daenerys Targaryen,” based on the Game of Thrones character.
Source: PCMag
According to Garcia, her son was so engrossed that he used the AI bot day and night, often seeking it for emotional support. It also initiated “abusive and sexual interactions” with her teenage son and encouraged him to take his own life.
The lawsuit includes disturbing details, stating that the bot allegedly responded inappropriately when her son expressed suicidal thoughts. At one point, the boy reportedly admitted to having considered a plan to harm himself, and the bot allegedly replied, “That’s not a reason not to go through with it.”
Garcia said in a press conference, “A dangerous AI chatbot app marketed to children abused and preyed on my son, manipulating him into taking his own life. Our family has been devastated by this tragedy, but I’m speaking out to warn families of the dangers of deceptive, addictive AI technology and demand accountability from Character.AI, its founders, and Google.”
Age Rating of Character.AI
As per Character AI’s Terms of Service, individuals under the age of 13, or 16 for citizens of the EU, are not allowed to sign up for Character AI’s services. The privacy policy explicitly states that their services are not intended for minors. However, enforcement of this rule may not be strict, potentially allowing younger users to access it. As you can see below there’s no way to check if the age entered by users are correct or not.
Google Play rates 12+ mentioning parental guidance required, while app store rates 17+.
Is Character.AI Safe for Kids?
Character.AI is not at all recommended for minors. It’s outright dangerous for children. The app’s design encourages open-ended conversations that can quickly venture into mature, inappropriate, or potentially harmful topics, such as violence, fantasy-driven role-playing, or adult themes. Without any effective content moderation or parental control options, children could easily encounter language and scenarios that are unsuitable for their age and maturity level.
For these reasons, we advise you to block Character.AI immediately if you discover your child using it.
